Course Criteria
Criteria for Designation and Evaluation of Internship, Practicum, and Clinical Practice (ICP) Courses
The basic criteria for designation as an internship, practicum, or clinical practice course at UCF includes student experiential learning which:
- relates directly to a students academic major or major-related career goal
- occurs in business, industry, non-profit, educational, or governmental agencies
- involves collaboration between campus and business community that aims to increase students work, personal, and academic competencies
- provides appropriate supervision both on site through a professional with related training and skills and through guidance from faculty
- involves structure for learning, including application of classroom content and assignments for reflection that would result in the development of student competencies and go beyond simple assignment of a student completing a set number of hours experience in a setting outside the academic classroom
- involves a minimum of 45 hours per credit per semester at the participating worksite to provide real-world experience and to promote interaction between students and professionals toward the development of professional attitudes and behavior (more hours may be required; fewer hours may be justified by the concentration of the experience or the learning objectives)
Experiences may be internships, practica, clinical practice, and other activities designed to develop or demonstrate implementation of competencies integral to student learning if they meet these criteria.
For designation as an internship, practicum, or clinical practice course, please:
- Provide a short summary of how the activity in this course will meet student learning needs.
- Provide a description of approval processes for student participation and where and how the requirements of the course will be carried out.
- Agree to a statement indicating willingness to use appropriate forms where necessary, such as release forms, and provide evaluative data as defined and required by the ICP Coordinating Committee.
- Provide a course syllabus and course materials that reflect the following:
- The achievement of the six criteria noted above
- A discussion of the learning objectives for the course
- A presentation of the processes used for students to make contact with work sites and a description of the methods to insure that the experience takes place
- A description of the means students will use to reflect upon their experience and its learning objectives
- A description of the faculty supervisory process and procedures to follow should problems arise
- A description of the evaluation methods that will be employed to evaluate student learning and the learning site.
- A discussion of the evaluation criteria that will be used to arrive at the final grade
After approval, the course or course section will be eligible to have an internship, practicum, clinical practice designation to receive funding at an enhanced level.
